HNIC Update – April Showers of Blessings

What up family?

I apologize for the delay! (I will revisit the post that I said I would write about Dr. Carson and the Democratic Party…but I have to do a little more research before I talk about that effectively; you know I like coming thoroughly and correct to you fam!) But here is a review on my April adventures…

What April 4th Means to Me…Reflections on Dr. King’s Assassination

What’s up family?

Room 306, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. It was here that he was martyred.

Room 306, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. It was here that he was martyred.

This day is always a somber one for me; it’s a day that I don’t let slip by without giving some thought or consideration because it’s just too important. On this day, 45 years ago, on the catwalk outside Room 306, the world was forever changed. So today I’m going to share what April 4th means to me.

Will the Real Women Please Stand Up?

What’s up family?

As you know it’s Women’s History Month. Since we consistently get a dose of Black History Month on this blog *smile*, I thought that I’d chime in and give my thoughts about this month. And to kick off my thoughts, I’m going to turn to a actress and “sex symbol” for an awe-striking bit of wisdom:

Ms. Mae West

The best way to learn to be a lady is to see how other ladies do it.” - Ms. Mae West

I think “Lady Mae” was on to something…so it’s with her words that I make the simple request: Will the real women, please stand up? This is going to be a long one…

The Black Apostasy

What’s up family?

Today I want to talk a little bit about the spiritual erosion that I see in the Black Community. The spirit and the soul seem to have been neglected and we are slowly evolving into a people that I don’t even recognize from my youth.

Sunday Worship - By Ted Ellis

Sunday Worship – By Ted Ellis

For instance, even if a family didn’t go to church every Sunday, there was still some reverence of God…especially exhibited by the older generation. How many of you remember a grandparent or great-grandparent saying, “Don’t play during a thunderstorm; God is doing his work?” I remember watching a movie, The Fighting Temptations, and one of the characters was making fun of a lady that told him not to let water run during a thunderstorm…the person he was “joking with” quickly corrected him, “Don’t play with God!” But in all seriousness, there was a fear of God ingrained in the minds of young people and a respect for His Church and I just don’t see it today…so let’s discuss the Black Apostasy.

Abortion: Just a Women’s Right Issue?

What’s up family?

I’m not sure if you realize it or not, but back in January, the country…uh….celebrated the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Before I continue, look at this picture I got from the CNN article, “Before and after Roe v. Wade,”  by Jacque Wilson:

Roe v. Wade Birthday Party...I mean...Protest in front of US Supreme Court Building

Roe v. Wade Birthday Party…I mean…Protest in front of US Supreme Court Building

Do you notice anything strikingly…”token” about this photograph? Perhaps the presence of the sole Black face holding the biggest poster. If a picture is worth 1,000 words, than certainly this is worthy of a blog post… This photograph represents so much of my disdain for abortion in as much this lady, most likely unbeknownst to her, is promoting self-hate… I’ve been trying to find the direct quote for a while, but I can’t put my finger on it. But I want to say it was Dr. Martin Luther King that said something along the lines of he wasn’t led to follow a skewed sociology that seeks to remedy effects versus looking at the cause. It’s easy to get a poster and parade around the US Supreme Court building and chanting keep abortion legal. It’s easy to accost a man in a tree at the presidential inauguration for him making an appeal for people to pray to end abortion. But the moment you show a picture of what it is they are actually encouraging to keep legal…they are offended. Following this paragraph, if you click the “read more” link, you will see very disturbing photographs of aborted fetuses. BE WARNED…

Blacks and Governance

President Obama's Second Inaugural

President Obama’s Second Inaugural

What’s up family?

I have no long drawn out excuses, reasons, apologies, etc., etc., etc., for my absence… It’s been a roller coaster ride. But I started this site three years ago today and it does mean a lot to me. More importantly, I see the potential of what it can be so…I’m back at it. I hope to get a post up at least once a week. I hope somebody out there can hold me accountable to that. I tell you what, I will post about what’s been going on these past few months to catch you up on me. I hope all is well with you! Now for today’s thought…NEGROES IN GOVERNANCE…can’t find them with a flashlight.

When one considers the history of Negroes, dating back to 1619, when the first 20 arrived at Jamestown Colony on the banks of the James River, through slavery, and Jim Crow, the second inauguration of President Obama gives said pondering mind great pause. This event is quintessentially “E pluribus unum,” Latin for “Out of many, one.”  While a person of color has ascended to the highest office of the land, we can’t be led to think that this is a panacea, or cure-all, for the Negro Community. Consider the following:

America…is it really the greatest country in the world?

What’s up family?

I hope everybody had an enjoyable Fourth of July. It was a pretty chill one for me. I went to my employer’s father’s house for a cookout then I went home. There were some interesting news stories like the one about the 15-second firework spectacular in San Diego. Then there was the tragic story from New York; my prayers go out to the families of the children that died. This has been a wild week with weather…severe storms, extreme heat, coupled with power outages… This will be a 4th to remember. But knowing me, I like to take a historical spin on things…
